W. Julian Parton, mining, stone companies

W. Julian Parton, 96, died March 4, 2013, in Kirkland Village. Born in Pottsville, he was a son of the late William A. and Edna (Holmes) Parton. He was the husband of Nancy Nelson (Joy) Parton.

He was a graduate of Pottsville High School and Pennsylvania State University where he earned a bachelor's degree in Mining Engineering. He was awarded a research fellowship at the University of Washington, Seattle, where he earned a master's degree in Mining Engineering. The Pennsylvania State University awarded him a professional degree of Engineer of Mines in 1944 as a result of his research work in the coal industry.

He worked for and was a president of Lehigh Navigation Coal Company. He organized and was chairman and president of the Panther Valley Coal Company. He was the assistant to the president and then president of General Crushed Stone Company, Easton, which in 1970 became a subsidiary of the Koppers Company. He then was appointed chairman and president of the General Crushed Stone Company division and named vice president of Koppers Company. He retired in 1979.

He was member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, Bethlehem.

He was a volunteer consultant with the International Executive Service Corporation, Singapore. He was a life member of the American Institute of Mining Engineers and the Pennsylvania State Professional Engineers. He was a member and past president of the National Crushed Stone Association. He was a director of the Easton National Bank and Trust Company; a trustee of the Easton Hospital; and was with the Forks of the Delaware United Fund. He was a member of the Presidents Club and the Obelisk Society, Pennsylvania State University. He was the author of publications and books on the coal and crushed stone industries. He was a former member of the Northampton Country Club, Easton.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, William of Loveland, Colo., John of Glen Mills and Richard of Garnet Valley; a daughter, Joy Parton Dallmeier of Annandale, Va.; five grandchildren; and three great-granddaughters.
