A report released last month by Hellertown Councilwoman Gail Nolf indicates pool rates will increase for the upcoming pool season.

Adult daily rates will see an increase to $6, resident season youth passes will increase to $45, resident season adult to $65, resident season family passes to $130 and resident season family additional passes to $15 each. Also, non-resident season youth passes will now cost $75, non-resident season adult passes $110, non-resident season family passes $190, non-resident season family additional passes $15 each and a weekend rate will be established at $8 for adults and $5 for youth.

Council Vice President John Bate said he disagrees with increasing the rate for residents.

"We're increasing rates for residents on the weekend," commented Bate. "We're punishing them. I just don't see a justification for increasing it on the weekend."

Nolf said the rates were increased because most people who use the pool on the weekends live in the Hellertown and Saucon Valley region.

"The committee felt this was a solution," Nolf said. "I don't understand what you don't understand."

Mayor Richard Fluck agreed with Bate.

"I don't think we should be penalizing our own," Fluck said.

Borough Manager Cathy Kichline said there is an increased cost on the weekend due to the necessity of more staff needed to work the pool.

Council President Philip Weber asked Kichline how Hellertown compared to other area pools in terms of price. Kichline said besides Bethlehem, which charges $4.50, Hellertown is the lowest.

The pool committee additionally recommended pool management incorporate healthier snacks for the 2013 season and recommended the lower gate remain open as an available access point.

The pool committee also agreed that Hellertown Police Chief Robert Shupp dispatch a police officer to stop by the pool several times a day.

Council approved the pool committee's recommendations.
