Parkland's Claroni to retire

L. Randy Claroni, director of curriculum, instruction and professional development, has an-nounced his retirement, effective June 30, after 36 years of service to the Parkland School District.

After earning a Bachelor's degree at Bloomsburg State College, Claroni accepted a position as an English teacher at Parkland High School in 1977.

He later became chair of the English department while continuing to teach.

Claroni took the role of supervisor of instruction at the high school in 2000 and coordinator of curriculum and instruction for special education in 2005.

He assumed his present position in 2011.

At the Jan. 15 school board meeting, Claroni offered comments on his career.

"The 36 years were simply phenomenal," he said. "Each year was filled with rewarding challenges."

He said the PSSA tests, which came along with the No Child Left Behind law, presented the challenge to have students well-prepared for the exams.

A concurrent development, the importance of data in evaluating student achievement, was another more recent item of focus. He noted planning and implementation of Parkland's cyber program occupied time and effort in the past few years.

Claroni said it was very rewarding to hear of the successes of former students.

"The students at Parkland challenged you to bring out the best in them," Claroni said. "That's what separates this district from the other districts."

He also offered words of praise for Parkland personnel.

"Working with the fine administrative team and the board over 36 years has been as rewarding as I can ever imagine," Claroni said. "It's been a great ride."

Board member Roberta Marcus commented on Claroni's influence at Parkland.

"You will leave a large footprint, which will be hard to fill," Marcus said.

Superintendent Richard Sniscak expressed his appreciation of Claroni's service.

"Randy is a great contributor to our team," Sniscak said. "He was an exceptional teacher and was a coach for many years. Randy gives tirelessly for the benefit of the school district."

He added Claroni's pleasant personality makes him a delight to work with.
