The Whitehall Township Board of Commissioners at Monday's workshop meeting grappled with establishing the salary of the township treasurer for the four-year-period beginning 2014. The board will vote Monday at setting the salary, although there appeared little support to increase the pay structure.

Board President Linda Snyder said the action by the commissioners is required so candidates seeking the office of treasurer this spring and fall are aware of the pay structure. The salary for an elected official, such as treasurer, cannot be increased while in office. The salary adjustment, if made, would be for 2014 through 2017. The matter, once voted on by the commissioners, is forwarded to the Lehigh County Elections Office to be placed on the ballot.

Township records show for 2013 the treasurer's salary is $35,215. In addition, the treasurer is paid for tax certifications and receives a salary from the Whitehall-Coplay School District for the collection of its real estate taxes.

The treasurer's position is currently held by Diane Hunsicker, who is seeking a raise for the office beginning the next term. She is expected to seek re-election. The commissioners have no quarrel with Hunsicker's work; in the past they have praised her efforts and innovations. They noted, however, they are looking at the position, not the person holding it, in determining if a pay raise is justified.

Commissioner Thomas Slonaker, who previously served as township treasurer, said he knows the office well since he served in that capacity. He said the treasurer has less responsibility since there is now a smaller staff of four persons.

Commissioner Philip Ginder was the most vocal in opposing a raise for the position of treasurer.

"I'm not going to be afraid to tell you," he stated in his steadfast opposition to giving the office of treasurer any raise for the four-year term. He said property owners can't take much more in taxes.

"It is what it is."' Ginder said, noting township residents now pay a library tax since the school district is bowing out of such commitments. "I'll take it on the chin."

Commissioner Clair Hunsberger said she favors keeping the present salary for the office of treasurer in place.

With Commissioners Paul Geissinger and Grard Palagonia not present, the outcome on setting the treasuer's salary won't occur until Monday when a vote is taken.
