The Allentown Rescue Mission was blessed with an amazing Christmas gift.

Local acting troupe, Players of the Stage, raised $16,500 for the mission through their production of the "Best Christmas Pageant Ever."

"We can't thank Players of the Stage enough for their hard work and dedication," Allentown Rescue Mission Development Manager Dawn Washington said. "The money they raised will allow us to help more homeless people in 2013."

Players of the Stage is a community theater group for local students, based out of Living Hope Presbyterian Church, Schantz Road, Lower Macungie Township, that aims to glorify God through drama.

There are no admission fees for Players of the Stage productions, rather, their shows raise money for local charities by asking for donations.

"Best Christmas Pageant Ever," , which ran during the last week of November and first week of December, involving the work of 70 students between the ages of 6 and 16 is the fifth production the group has performed to raise money for the mission.

"Our audiences give so generously and it's very humbling," Players of the Stage Production Manager Beth Barshinger said. "The kids put on such an excellent show."

Players of the Stage has raised more than $46,000 for Allentown Rescue Mission programs and services that help homeless people in the Lehigh Valley.

The group wanted to raise $15,000, and far surpassed that goal.

"Players of the Stage is truly a gem in our community," Washington said. "The Lehigh Valley should be proud such a kind-hearted group is working hard to take care of people in need."
