Northwestern Elementary students honor area veterans

Students and staff at Northwestern Elementary School recently gathered names of family and friends who served in a branch of the United States military.

They then wrote the 906 names on stars, which were placed on a red, white or blue banner stripe and lined the hallways surrounding the rotunda in the school's lobby.

Ross Kirk created the banners and displays in the lobby.

On Nov. 12, everyone was invited to wear red, white and blue clothing or a ribbon created for the event.

As part of the celebration, music teacher Shawn Fies, media specialist Susan Hanlon and physical education teacher Bonnie Millward, brought the fourth-grade students to the rotunda of the school where they sang "The Star Spangled Banner."

The national anthem was highlighted during Tiger Television on Veterans Day.
