Twisted Reed offers gallery for holiday shopping
Kim Borgman, who does basket weaving, and Shirlene Silfies, who specializes in handpainted Santa Clauses, decided to give the community a place to view many different crafts suitable for the holiday season.
The method they chose is the Twisted Reed Holiday Gallery, Lynnport.
The shop, on the corner of Routes 143 and 863, showcases work from 15 local crafters.
Silfies said the shop is located in the old summer kitchen of the house on the corner. The house was built in the mid 1800s.
Before Borgmans bought it, the house belonged to an antiques dealer.
The plaster in the summer kitchen was removed leaving unique slate walls. The floor is original.
Everything inside is handcrafted.
Soap, displayed in a small washtub and backed by scrub boards, is a new product this year.
The soap is made by the Wash Tub Soap Company.
Colorful aprons made from vintage fabric are sold paired with a matching hot mitt.
Silfies said she has made 42 different Santas, each researched and correct for a different part of the world.
There are customers who have added each new Santa to their collection.
Some have taken up a new home in a distant country such as those that went to Switzerland, Australia, Germany, France and elsewhere.
Delicate porcelain pottery lining a set of shelves has beautiful nature themes.
The feel of the entire shop is earthy with the crafts made from natural materials.
Silfies and Borgman spend a lot of time deciding on the best display for the crafts brought to the shop.
During the holiday season as items are purchased, others are rearranged to keep the pleasing appearance for new shoppers.
Cutting boards are made from a variety of wood, some of them so special they have to be imported.
The cutting boards as well as stained glass are new to the shop.
Borgman, who is inspired by nature, is a self-taught basket weaver, a hobby she began 20 years ago.
Wool herb bags are decorated with hand-hooked detail. Knitted hats are also available. Beaded jewelry comes from three crafters.
Lauren Ondra makes hand-woven Argentinean-style scarves on a loom her husband made for her.
Twisted Reed, now in its 12th year, is open only for the holiday season.
The gallery will be open 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Dec. 8, 9,15 and 16. Parking is in the back, off Route 863.
