Northwestern Elementary School fourth-grade students recently toured the MedEvac helicopter when it landed at the Northwestern Lehigh's stadium for a Safety Day program.
Each student sat inside the helicopter so he or she could see the types of equipment used by the medical staff.
They met Nurse Nikki Nothstein and Flight Paramedic Chuck Allen, as well as Lead Pilot John Driscoll, and were able to ask questions of these three medical professionals.
Each life-saving flight includes a nurse, flight paramedic and pilot.
Driscoll explained he is directed to a safe landing site where the medical crew is met by an ambulance and its crew.
They also learned it takes approximately four minutes to fly from Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township, to the school stadium.
MedEvac is called to scenes when the patient is in critical condition and needs urgent treatment.
MedEvac has helicopters stationed in Kutztown, Weatherly, Pottsville and Stroudsburg.
During Safety Day, students also learned how to dial 9-1-1; to stop, drop and roll when on fire, and how to escape from a fire in their home.
