Husband and wife team to fight cancer together

Northampton residents Bob and Carol Barron have raised $30,000 dollars in the past five years working with The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Team in Training Program.

Carol Barron was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma in 2004 and has been in remission for the past eight years.

The Barrons got involved with the program following Carol's diagnosis.

The program includes different athletic events to help raise money. Events include 5K runs, half marathons, full marathons and triathlon relays.

"The camaraderie with the people and the way they care about finding a cure for blood cancer is the best part about working with the program," said Bob. "We have gotten especially close to the coaches."

Bob Barron plans to walk his first full marathon on Jan. 13, 2013, in Disney. His shirt will display names of those he walks for.

"We never thought we would be doing this," he said.

"It's kept me healthy," Carol said of participating in the program.

Carol plans to run the Disney 5K with Bob as a warmup two days before the full marathon. During the marathon Carol will be Bob's cheerleader.

The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society has invested more than $875 million for developing better cancer treatments. An Eastern Pennsylvania chapter covers 18 counties and has given more than $1.1 million to help survivors with medical costs.

The Barrons train on many different trails in the area, including the Ironton Rail-Trail.

To walk in the full marathon Bob must raise $3,400. Anyone interested in donating to the Barrons cause may do so at http://pages.teamintraining.org/epa/wdw13/rbarronb5l.
