Five-year-old Caitlyn Rogan and her toddler brother, Cooper, will have the honor Sunday of pressing the button to illuminate the thousands of twinkling lights on the Borough of Northampton's community Christmas tree.
For Caitlyn and Cooper, it is a special ceremony since the 35-foot blue spruce tree was donated to the borough by their grandparents, Dennis and Pat Rogan, who live on Eighth Street.
"Steve Gerny [borough public works supervisor] came to me and asked if we would be willing to donate a tree to the borough for its Christmas tree. We had two trees. He said the first tree had some bare spots. We looked at the other tree and he said it was perfect," Rogan said.
Mentioning he and his wife were concerned the tree would fall over, especially since a large tree two doors down was knocked over by Hurricane Sandy, they agreed to donate the evergreen tree to the borough for the Christmas season.
"The tree is 31 years-old. We had it in the house for Christmas when my son was small," Rogan said.
Late Friday morning, borough public works personnel and Gerny showed up with a flatbed truck and a crane from Sidleck Welding & Fabricating, Whitehall.
In no time, the crew cut the base of the tree and loaded it onto the flatbed truck for its journey to the traingle at Main Street and Laubach Avenue.
The tree will remain dark until the borough's official tree lighting ceremony is held Sunday, 5:30 p.m.
Santa will visit with the children at 6 p.m.
