NHS girls fall to Catty in powder puff game

Northampton High School had its side of the bleachers completely full for football on Sunday night.

Of course, it was for the annual powder puff game against Catty High. The Konkrete Kids fell 21-18 to the Roughie girls.

The Konkrete Kids defense stood out at times with key flag pulls by Lauren Gabryluk, Monica Hanson, Erin Tiwold, Dakota Sarbough, Lindsay Sandlick, Lindsay Vaisconi and Hannah Boyanoski.

Northampton's offense was run like Urban Meyer's Ohio State offense, alternating quarterbacks Shelby Herstine and Tori Gollie, who is headed to LaSalle University to play field hockey. Both girls passed well in the loss.

Catty struck first after Erika Lebron took the opening kickoff to their own 40. Then a sweep took her nine more yards and Emily Williams ran it up the middle for four yards and finally scampered 45 yards around the left side to score at 12:26 in the first period. Laura Gerhard's (who transferred from Whitehall back to Catty) kick was good and it was 7-0.

Extra point conversions proved to be the difference in a closely-played game. Northampton didn't complete any and Gerhard kicked all three for Catasauqua.

Laura Tierney excelled in receiving, catching a 31-yarder from Shelby Herstine down to the 2-yard line. Tierney was rewarded with a handoff and score with 7:11 in the first quarter. The conversion failed and cut the score to 7-6. Tierney caught 30 and 11 yarders in the second quarter, finished with 106 yards receiving.

In the second quarter with 11:36 to play, Catty QB Paige Kogelman bootlegged 25 yards for a score. The kick was good and the Brown and White led 14-6.

Tori Gollie was involved in two of the K-Kids three scores. Gollie ran for a two-yard touchdown with 14:05 in the fourth period to make it 14-12.

But Catty answered back. Lauren Pluchinsky caught a 32-yard pass from Kogelman with 9:20 to play and Gerhard remained perfect on the night with extra points to make it 21-12. Gerhard, daughter of former NHS head football coach Chris Gerhard, broke up a pass and stopped a two-point conversion as well on the night. Earlier in the year, Gerhard played field hockey against Northampton as a member of the Whitehall High School team..

Gollie and the Kids would strike again though. She threw an eight-yard touchdown pass to Michelle Dally with 3:57 to play. After another missed conversion, NHS was trailing 21-18 and that's how the game would end.

Serena Kocher rushed for 78 yards and went over 100 total yards, including runbacks. Hanna Hartman chugged out some yardage for the Kids as well.

After the game Tori Gollie said, "I knew it would be a hard game. We have kids coaching us and they have regular coaches. We took a month to practice. My favorite parts of the game were watching our receivers catching the ball and our defense at work."

Northampton never got the ball back after their last TD. Olivia Falko, Kogelman and Emily Williams took turns running out the clock for the Roughies.
