Allen Township is considering asking Northampton or Lehigh Township police to help control speeders.
Allen Supervisors Bruce Frack and William Holmes serve on a committee looking into the ongoing problem of speeding motorists and are planning to meet with Northampton and Lehigh Township police departments to gauge their interest in such a venture.
Supervisor Chairman Paul Balliet Balliet said state police, who cover Allen Township, have been on Savage Road at commute times. He said the township will first find out if the state police can beef up patrols.
A Felice Drive resident at the supervisors meeting reported motorists do not stop at any of the three stop signs in the area.
The resident suggested someone contact Northampton for help patrolling areas where speeding is a problem.
Northampton Borough Council President John Yurish said he does not think the borough would be interested in providing Allen Township with police patrols at this time.
"It would be way down the road," Yurish said.
Borough Police Chief Ronald Morey said such a decision would have to be made by the eight-member council.
Morey pointed out that the department has 11 officers, down from 12 officers several years ago.
If the borough would consider offering police coverage outside its boundaries, it would have to conduct a study to determine whether more officers or vehicles would be needed, along with exploring other issues such as insurance.
