Northampton Borough Council delayed the presentation of the 2013 budget until its December meeting.

The delay was due to the fact that borough Manager Gene Zarayko was unable to attend the Nov. 15 meeting due to an illness. Zarayko was responsible for crunching the numbers for next year's budget.

A few details regarding the budget did emerge, however. The manager's report indicated the proposed budget "requires a 1-mill tax increase" for the town's property owners.

Next year's budget has expenses projected at $5,758,666. The expected revenue, in the form of real estate taxes, is projected at $5,722,239 with the increase.

The budget also includes a projected opening balance that leaves the borough with an anticipated closing balance in 2013 of $207,762.

Council President John Yurish said the eight borough lawmakers were given copies of the proposed budget. He recommended they examine the contents so a review of specific expenditures and receipts can be conducted at the December meeting.

No council member posed questions regarding the proposed budget. They decided to wait until they can fully review the budget.

Also during the meeting, Councilman Robert Coleman reported the recent Delaware & Lehigh National Heritage Trail Marathon "was a great success." He said there were approximately 800 runners, including 200 from the canceled New York City Marathon. Participants left the area clean. The run began near the Atlas Park in Northampton.

Councilman Ed Pany reported on building, land and recreation matters. He said the annual cheerleading competition sponsored by the Northampton Recreation Center "was very successful."

The event, held on Northampton Area School District property, is estimated to have yielded the recreation center between $6,000 and $7,000.
