Sandy makes her presence felt
Northampton borough did not escape the wrath of superstorm Sandy last week. LeRoy Brobst, assistant to the borough manager, said trees and power lines came toppling down and blackness covered the borough as a result of the aggressive, forceful winds.
According to the PPL website, 9,527 residents in Northampton experienced a power outage. All power had been restored by Tuesday, according to the website.
"At some point in time, just about everyone was without power," Brobst told The Press. "Not many people came away clear as a whistle."
Specifically, Brobst said, trees were knocked down in the park and damage was inflicted on the borough bandshell.
Brobst said the borough prepared for possible water damage by ensuring pumps were up and running and filling sand bags prior to the arrival of Sandy.
"The wind was something different," he said.
Brobst attributes the efforts of borough personnel and citizens in keeping the effects of the hurricane at a manageable level.
"I think our community came through in pretty good shape through the efforts of volunteers, police and the public works crew," Brobst said.
Bath Borough Manager Thomas Petrucci told The Press public works personnel prepared for the storm by clearing stormwater inlets, outlets and pipes found throughout the borough. In addition, he said, a leaf vacuum was utilized to remove leaves around storm drains.
Petrucci said after the storm public works personnel cleared borough roads of debris and he worked with Med-Ed officials to gather more accurate estimates regarding the restoration of power.
Scott Surgeoner, Med-Ed spokesperson, told The Press Tuesday morning 1,244 residents initially lost power during the storm, and all power has been restored to Bath customers.
Petrucci added East Main Street was the only road closed in the borough.
East Allen Township experienced 19 power outages, PPL reported. A total of 581 customers lost power in Allen Township.
Lehigh Township experienced 4,260 outages and Moore Township experienced 1,246 black outs.
As of Wednesday, power was restored.
