Girls fall in semis
Friday may have been the end of the season for Northampton's field hockey team, but remember the Kids "have a lot to celebrate," according to Coach Kelly Backenstoe.
Northampton's season ended with a 3-1 loss to Stroudsburg in the District 11 3A semifinals at Whitehall and, although there were plenty of tears it was a great season overall.
"Our senior leadership was great and even after Emily's (Nonnemacher) injury our girls didn't give up and kept pressing," said Backenstoe. "We had nine seniors and they were great role models, not only on the field, but in the classroom and the community."
Nonnemacher, who tore an ACL in a loss to Whitehall on Oct. 4, wound up with 16 goals and had 37 for her career to place third behind Jordan Martin and Ashley Santee as Northampton's top scorers.
Besides Nonnemacher, Coach Backenstoe singled out senior goalie Mikayla Ninos who had eight shutouts during the Kids' 16-4-1 season. Senior twins Erin and Megan Tiwold were prolific scorers along with junior Kaitlyn Fehnel.
Tori Gollie, Jackie Miller, Brianna Bankos, Jenny Perry and Laura Tierney were among the other senior role models.
As a team, 11 girls scored goals and 12 had assists during the season.
Fehnel, Brianna Dalton, Autumn Klucsarits, Katie Minnich, Victoria Pizzoferrato, Ashley Schell, Madison Gogal, Shannon Knipe, and Taylor Kerbacher are among the juniors who should be back next year.
Add sophomores Megan Wiest, Makenna Marhefka, Rachel Heimbach, and Amber Saylor and the furture looks bright for the Kids.
"We were one win away from reaching the states, but we did win our division (Lehigh Valley Conference's North Division) and reached the District 11 semifinals," said Backenstoe. "They're a great group of girls."
Getting back to last Friday's loss, Fehnel scored the tying goal with 10 minutes remaining, but Stroudsburg's Becca Adelmann scored two late goals as the Mountaineers avenged a 2-1 loss to Northampton in the regular season.
Stroudsburg reached the District 11 finals and lost to Emmaus 5-1 - the Hornets' 24th straight District 11 crown.
