Lower Mac 110s, 95s advance to championship game

The 110-pound Lower Macungie Mustangs advanced to the league champsionship game by beating South Parkland 6-0 in a thrilling overtime battle last weekend.

After a defensive stalemate that led to overtime, the Mustangs' defense came up big again on four plays in South Parkland's opening overtime possession. Three plays later, Bailey O'Connor tossed the game-winning touchdown pass to Carlton Lovette which sealed the win. While the offense did not score in regulation, the Mustangs were able to move the ball with power running by Sone Ntoh and Timmy Higgins.

However, it was the Mustangs' defense that was relentless. The defense gave up one first down and held South Parkland to negative offensive yards for the game. Liam Garrett, Collin Ravier and Carlton Lovette pressured the quarterback, while Tyler Fritz, Mason Boyd and Ryan Sylvia blanketed the South Parkland receivers.

The Mustangs will face the Bethlehem Bulldogs for the 110-pound championship.

A week earlier, the 110s opened the first round of the SYFL playoffs with a 26-0 win over North Parkland. Tailback Sone Ntoh led the way for Lower Mac's offense with two long TD runs behind blocking from Richie Tracchio, Jaden Vazquez, and Adam Heiserman. Reece Wieder and Liam Garrett opened up a hole on the left side for fullback Timmy Higgins, who broke several tackles for a long touchdown run of his own. Tight end Carlton Lovett closed out the scoring with a TD pass from Bailey O'Connor.

The defense posted another shutout, thanks to strong play from middle linebacker Collin Ravier and free safety Tyler Fritz. Jackson Peterson and Alex Kleinschmidt anchored a defensive line that limited running lanes, and linebackers Ryan Sylvia and Noah Kociban closed things up to stifle the Buffaloes ground attack. Lower Mac improved their record to 8-1 and advance to take on South Parkland in the semifinals.

The 95-pounders also advanced to the championship game, picking up wins over South Parkland and Nazareth en route to the final.

Lower Mac opened the tournament by scoring a 14-0 upset of second-seeded South Parkland . It was the Mustang defense leading the charge all game, preserving a shutout led by the great efforts of Tyler Keller, Nick Velde and Caleb Kern.

In the first quarter Tanner Ritter took a handoff 45 yards to the endzone and Alex Orlando added the kicked extra point for an 8-0 lead going into halftime. The 95s got strong offensive line play by Justin Hollinger, Connor Carter and Ethan Macik. The second scoring drive was finished by Tyler Keller as he punched in a one-yard score.

Ritter's running was key in the semifinal game as the 95s topped the Little Blue Eagles 14-6 in the semis to set up a showdown with Emmaus.

The top seeded 125-pound team rolled to an impressive 18-0 win over the Bethlehem Raiders in the opening round, but were upset by LCYA 30-7 in the semifinals to end their year at 9-1.

Against the Raiders, Stefan Rollins hit Zach Kociban for two long TD passes. Rollins had great protection up front from Dennis Csensits, Dimitri Anagnostou and Zach Higgins. Cody Gross also had a one-yard TD run behind fullback Kociban.

The story of the day was the defense as they shutout the Raiders behind solid play by Bobby Newhard, Dalton Daddona, Louie Baloh and Chris Smith. The Mustangs had several key injuries, but showed their depth as Seamus Finnegan, Justin Chandler and Jake Wieder all stepped up and filled in with great efforts.
