It's all in the timing, Northwestern thespians say
Northwestern Lehigh High School Drama Club feels it's all in the timing.
These young thespians have been hard at work on 14 vignettes, written by David Ives, that are combined under one title, "All in the Timing."
Ives designed this group of vignettes to fit together and force his audience to consider how they use their language.
The list of mini-playes include: Variations on the Death of Trotsky; English Made Easy; Words, Words, Words; Sure Thing; Lives of the Saints; Time Flies; The Philadelphia; A Singular Guy; Dr. Fritz; Degas C'est Moi; Arabian Nights; Captive Audience and Philip Glass Buys a Loaf of Bread.
Vera Sweeney as Mae and Quentin Bernhard as Horace were recently rehearsing their roles as Mayflies in Time Flies, a story about two Mayflies who find each other and fall in love, although they are afraid to admit it.
As the two Mayflies enjoy some time together chatting and flirting, they are joined onstage by a narrator from the Television Show "Swamp Life" and learn they have a life span of one day and are the favorite food of salmon, trout and bull frogs.
Dylan Rex as Leon Trotsky and Jenny Von Holt as his wife, Natalia, take the stage in "Variations of the Death of Trotsky."
The story centers on the death of Trotsky in eight different scenarios, which always end with the same result, Trotsky's death by the hand of an assassin who has been posing as his Spanish gardener.
Natalia Trotsky is seen entering from Stage Left carrying an encyclopedia. As she enters she is reading about the death of her husband as he listens. Director Bill Mutimer told this reporter many of his students do not know what an encyclopedia is because of modern technology.
Sammi Wiik and Brianna Neilson play Flo and Edna, respectively, in "Lives of the Saints." In the vignette, Flo and Edna prepare a funeral luncheon while chatting about food and funerals.
Wiik said this drama is actually humerous because the amount of food they are making is far more than they will need to feed 12 guests.
"All in the Timing" will be presented at Northwestern Lehigh High School 7 p.m. Nov. 8-10. Tickets are only available at the door.
