Girls in final four

Northampton's field hockey team is in District 11's Class 3A "Final Four" and play today Thursday Stroudsburg.

The No. 3 seeded Konkrete Kids take on the No. 2 seeded Mountaineers at 3:20 at Whitehall High School with top-seeded Emmaus facing Bangor at 7:30 at Whitehall with the championship game slated for Saturday.

The semifinals were originally scheduled for Wednesday but Hurricane Sandy forced a change in the District 11 playoffs schedule with a 3A soccer game slated for 5 p.m. at Whitehall.

The K-Kids of Coach Kelly Backenstoe vaulted into the semifinals with a 1-0 decision over 11th seed Allen last Saturday at Northampton's Joan Kremus Field.

Megan Tiwold, a senior, scored her sixth goal of the season at the 12:31 mark of the first half for the Kids lone goal and senior goalie Mikayla Ninos registered her eighth shutout by stopping five shots.

The Konkrete Kids (16-3-1) coupled a powerful offensive attack (11 shots on goal and 10 corners) with outstanding defense from Ninos and senior Tori Gollie and junior Bri Dalton to upend Allen (9-10-1).

Northampton, which had a "live-nation" scrimmage with class 2A finalist Southern Lehigh last Tuesday, "looked good," according to Backenstoe.

"We're working on some new plays," she added as the Kids prepared to face Stroudsburg for the second time this season. The Mountaineers (18-2) downed Parkland 2-0 last Saturday after being handed the first loss of the season by Northampton (2-1 on Oct. 6).

In District 11's other 3A quarterfinals last Saturday, Emmaus (19-1) shut out Nazareth 1-0 and Bangor (19-2) stopped Whitehall 2-1.
