Borough approves NASD bandshell use

The Northampton Area High School bonfire is making a comeback.

At its last meeting, Northampton Borough Council granted Dr. Kathleen Ott's request, on behalf of NASD, to use the borough's portable band shell for the bonfire, scheduled for 6-9 p.m. Nov. 17 at Becky's Drive-In on Route 248 in Lehigh Township.

Councilman Anthony Lopsonzski Sr. opposed the vote, providing no explanation. The borough has permitted many organizations to use the band shell for events.

"They [NASD] are trying to resurrect the annual Turkey Day Bonfire," borough Manager Gene Zarayko said. The bonfire will take place at the pep rally preceding the annual Turkey Day football classic between the Konkrete Kids and the Catasauaqua High School Rough Riders.

"I would like to recommend approving this request and also waiving any and all fees because it is for the Northampton Area School District," Zarayko added.

The Northampton Exchange Club and its counterpart in Catasauqua will continue the long-standing tradition of co-sponsoring the "Bury the Hatchet" Dinner this month at the Northampton Memorial Community Center. The dinner takes on the trappings of a roast, during which time school principals, administrators, athletic directors make predictions and make jokes about the other side.

The gridiron classic this year will be held in Catasauqua. A powder puff spoof game is scheduled earlier between the two schools.
