A very cool day with sunny skies greeted more than 25 riders on the interpretive bike ride along the D&L trail Oct. 13.

The event was hosted by the Lehigh Township Rails to Trails group, whose members addressed cyclists at the Cove Road trail head.

Riders learned about the history of Laurys Station and Treichlers, as well as some of the geology that has determined the path of the Lehigh River.

During the ride, Rails to Trails members highlighted the roles played by Rockdale and Lockport as stopping places along the railroad and canal routes.

Mike Naugle, a member of the Bertsch-Hokendauqua-Catasauqua Watershed Association, gave a presentation on invasive species around the Slatington trail head.

Near the end of the ride, pictures of past structures at Lehigh Gap were shown to everyone.

Riders then rested, ate and explored the Lehigh Gap Nature Center.

Due to the success of this event, Lehigh Township Rail to Trails is planning to host a walk and another ride in the spring. Look for information about those events when the leaves start budding.
