Field hockey suffers first loss of year
It wasn't the best week for Northampton's Field Hockey team, but it finished well enough.
The Konkrete Kids lost twice, won once and tied once - but, all-in-all things wound up with the K-Kids clinching a berth in the Lehigh Valley Conference playoffs.
First, Northampton's 12-game win streak came to an end when perennial LVC and District 11 champion Emmaus took a 3-1 decision at the Kids' Joan Kremus Field.
Then the Kids dropped a 1-0 game at Whitehall to drop their LVC mark to 10-2.
But, Coach Kelly Backenstoe's squad rebounded by handing Mountain Valley Conference leader Stroudsburg a 2-1 loss, which was the Mountaineers' first defeat.
And on Monday, Northampton and Parkland battled to a 1-1 draw, but by tying, the Kids clinched first place in the LVC's North Division with a 10-2-1 record.
So, Northampton will advance to the LVC playoffs with Emmaus (West) and Liberty (East) with Whitehall, Parkland, and Nazareth trying to get the fourth spot. Incidentally, Nazareth entertained the Kids Wednesday night on the LVC's final night of action after Press deadlines. The Kids also visit nonleague foe Saucon Valley on Friday.
Coach Backenstoe is still upbeat.
"We just have to capitalize our opportunities. We work hard all the time and must improve on our corners," she said. "I'm absolutely upbeat as are the girls. Our speed is improving and in the Stroudburg game it was outstanding."
Backenstoe also noted that three of her Kids have made the LVC All-Star team with forward Emily Nonnemacher - who was injured in the Whitehall game - and goalie Mikayla Ninos on the first team. Meanwhile, Megan Wiest was named honorable mention.
In the Emmaus loss, the Kids' Bri Bankos scored her first goal of the season for a 1-0 lead before the Hornets' Kassidy Green tied it. Krissy Mikelson added two second-half goals for the Hornets and Northampton's season-long win streak ended.
Whitehall's Sarah Schannauer scored the Zephyrs' only goal as Northampton was held scoreless for the first game this year.
"Emily's (Nonnemacher) injury came in the first 5 minutes of that game and it sort of took the air out of us," Said Backenstoe. "We had to reorganize before the Stroudsburg game and our girls all stepped up."
Against host Stroudsburg on Saturday, it was Makenna Marhefka scoring twice in a 2-1 victory.
The Monday in the Kids' final regular-season home game, Kate Fehnel scored the game-tying goal in the second half for a 1-1 deadlock with Parkland.
