LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Boys aiming for LVC playoff berth

The Northampton boys soccer team was as fired up and warm as the day on one of the last nice end of summer days at Whitehall sporting complex last Friday afternoon, beating the host Zephyrs 2-0.

John Yeaw got the Kids on the board first at the 18:30 mark of the first half finishing a ball fed to him from Tyler Davis.

The play was all set up when side midfielder Nick Stewart made a run up the right wing and crossed a ball into the box. Davis did an outstanding job keeping the ball in the box while fending off two to three defenders and getting enough of his foot on the ball to get it on frame. Yeaw crashed the keeper and put his foot on it and the ball slowly rolled into the back of the net.

At the 12:31 mark of the second half Marcus Morris drilled a well placed free kick into the upper 90 for the team's second goal. Coach Craig Carvin spent the second half getting valuable playing time to many of the reserves, who also did a good job doing work to keep pressure on the Whitehall back line.

Keeper Kory DeCesaris came up big, making point blank save after point blank save to maintain the shutout. He finished the day with 13 spots.

Northampton heads into the last week of the regular season with three more games. They will play Parkland at Al Erdosy Field Tuesday night for Senior Night. Then play at Andrew S. Leh stadium Thursday night, and finish up at East Stroudsburg South Saturday morning.

Northampton maintains a one-game lead in the race for the LVC Wild Card berth for the league playoffs.

In the five years Craig Carvin has coached the Northampton boys soccer program, he has never defeated Easton.

A well-coached and conditioned team with a great feeder program who reloads every year, Easton ended the Kids chances for a berth in the LVC playoffs last season by defeating Northampton 1-0 on a goal by Gabe Robinson.

Robinson took his talents to the University of Cincinnati this fall, and also gone was coach Tim Hall, who chose to coach Easton's girls program.

This season's game proved a different result.

Marcus Morris, the true quarterback of the NHS attack, was involved with both goals in a 2-0 victory last Thursday afternoon at Easton.

The first goal came 14 minutes into the game. Off a direct kick, Morris sent a long ball into the box. The ball bounced off the near post and right to AJ Schroettner, who fired the shot past keeper Brad Boothe and a 1-0 lead.

The second goal came with 13 minutes remaining when Morris launched one of his many long throws into the box and Greg Casee came sprinting from his right outside midfield position to head the ball down and fire a shot high into the net and the pivotal 2-0 lead. Easton would be awarded a penalty kick with 10 minutes remaining but the shot was placed right at keeper Kory DeCesaris who made an easy save. He finished the match with 9 stops.

After receiving a water bath from his team for his first victory over Easton, Carvin pointed out that this was a great team effort. He has been impressed with his regular players but also gave credit to guys that come off the bench and do their jobs like Casee, Tim Kelly, Aaron Kern, and Chris Rehrig.

This win proved big in the race for the LVC wild card entry.

With how well Northampton has been playing in conference, the Kids had to step out of their element and make the hour bus ride north Saturday morning for a match against Pocono West. Even more out of the ordinary was a 10 a.m. start after the bus ride and the sluggishness proved itself aware as the score was 0-0 at the half.

Carvin gave a lot of the reserves a chance to start and play, giving the rest of the guys a much needed breath of fresh air. It was good that Carvin did just that, as Tyler Davis came off the bench in the second half and scored two goals in a six-minute span to give Northampton a 3-2 win.

Tyler's first goal came with six minutes left in the match when he made a move to beat Pocono keeper Kelvin Olivo and shot the ball at a small angle yet got the ball into the net. Not wanting to play another overtime game, Carvin watched as Tim Kelly worked hard to play a ball to Davis on the left side of the box. Davis put everything he had into the shot and Olivo never had a chance to make the save as Northampton took a 3-2 lead with 14.2 seconds remaining.

Marcus Morris got the first goal of the match off a pass from John Yeaw. Austin Cooper played goal the entire match for the Kids, making 6 saves.
