LETTER TO THE EDITOR

To the Editor:

The new regulations from the federal government for school lunch shouldn't surprise anyone.

But to say, "If you don't like the federal government regulations then pack your own lunch," was an ignorant statement by Northampton Area School Board member Jennifer Miller.

The school lunch subsidation program is to help parents of lower income households afford lunch. Children receive either free lunch or pay 40 cents for lunch rather than $1.75 if their parent's income levels fall below a certain point based on the size of their family.

The part that has many people angry is that their children must actively pick a fruit or vegetable to avoid paying the much more expensive a la cart prices.

I don't understand what our elected and paid politicians were thinking when they voted to pass this legislation.

Perhaps they were thinking how they could save money by not having to subsidize or pay for meals because children will likely not pick something they do not want.

To think a 5- or 6-year-old will make a conscience decision to eat healthier by choosing a fruit or vegetable is absurd!

This issue was not created nor can it be changed by any school board.

Elected officials in congress are responsible and should be contacted by those concerned or angry about this stupid regulation.

That should have been the comment Miller made.
