Girls win again
The Konkrete Kids are ranked No. 1 in the District 11 field hockey ratings and Northampton solidified their standings with a 2-1 overtime victory over Liberty on Saturday.
The Konkrete Kids (12-0 overall and 10-0 in the Lehigh Valley Conference) faced some tough tests this week, however.
The clash with perennial District 11 champion Emmaus was postponed by rain on Tuesday and rescheduled for Wednesday. Then Thursday, Northampton visits Whitehall, a team the Kids beat 2-1 in overtime way back on Sept. 6. Saturday the Kids visit unbeaten Stroudsburg before closing out their regular- season schedule next week with Parkland at home Monday; a visit to Nazareth Wednesday and a nonleague game at Saucon Valley on Friday.
Coach Kelly Backenstoe said she's, "proud for the girls. It's a dream season coming true for them. The girls are very excited and are getting rewarded for their great effort."
"However, our season isn't over and the girls worked very hard to get where they are."
Northampton ranks first in the District 11 rankings, based on schedule and victories. Emmaus, Stroudsburg and Bangor are rated 2, 3, and 4. The Kids added Liberty to their victim list on Saturday with their overtime victory during Senior Day at the Joan Kremus Field.
Sophomore Makenna Marhefka scored the winning goal with only 21 seconds remaining in the 7-on-7, OT period. Marhefka notched the goal as she got a rebound from Erin Tiwold.
Northampton and Liberty traded goals within a minute and 25 seconds span about a third of the way through the second half.
Emily Nonnemacher, Northampton's top goal scoring notched her 16th of the season with 21:05 left in regulation. Megan Tiwold, Erin's twin sister, had the assist.
But, Liberty tied it at the 19:42 mark on a shot by Chelsea DeFrancesca on an assist from Kali Shumock.
Earlier last week, goalie Mikayla Ninos registered her sixth shutout as the Kids clipped host Easton 1-0 in overtime on Nonnemacher's goal.
"We've been using everybody on over 18-player squad," Backenstoe said. "It's been a total team effort all the way around so far."
