Notaro 2nd
Evan Notaro owns two District 11 medals, earning one in each of his two appearances at the district championship.
The Northampton senior was hoping to add some Lehigh Valley Conference hardware to his trophy case Monday at the LVC Golf Championship.
Notaro earned a league medal Monday at Allentown Municipal Golf Course, but it wasn't the one he was hoping for. He shot a 4-over par 76 to tie for second place, earning the silver medal by a match of cards.
"I wasn't very happy with how I played," said Notaro. "I couldn't hit the shots I wanted and putts were not dropping.
"I definitely wanted to shoot around even par. During the season I averaged like 69. I was playing really well. To come in and spray them like this was a bit of a shock. I just have to work on my swing."
Emmaus junior Grant Schumaker won the tournament with an even-par 72. Monday marked Notaro's best finish at a league tournament. He tied Kyle Wambold (Emmaus), Chad Hess (Parkland) and Bret Howey (Nazareth) for second place.
After winning the District 11 title as a sophomore and taking third place last year, a conference title would have been a great addition to Notaro's resume. But the windy conditions Monday made the course difficult as the boys played it from the blue tees, which measure 6,546 yards.
"It's a mental game here," said Notaro. "This course is tighter on some holes and I have to get over that."
Schumaker, who is not one of the longer hitters in the field, kept his ball in play, hit 12 greens in regulation and rode his hot putter to the title.
"I knew that from this yardage I just have to fight for pars and not try to go for pins," Schumaker said. "If you can you make a birdie, make a birdie, but I was just trying for as many pars as I could.
"I putted really good. I only had 30 putts. That's a lot better than I usually do."
Northampton's Kevin Kunkle also earned a league medal, which went to the top 10 finishers Monday. Kunkle shot 80 and tied with three other players. The match of cards went in his favor for eighth place.
Kids teammate Tyler Smith was only two strokes away from a medal, shooting 82 for a 13th-place tie. Carter Test shot 88, while Derek Kressler fired an 89 and Anthony Cavallo carded a 90.
Notaro will be back in action this weekend as he qualified for the Lehigh Valley Amatuer Championship, which will be played at Green Pond Golf Course.
He and several of his high school teammates will play Monday at Woodstone in the District 11 Class AAA qualifying tournament. They will also play Wednesday in the District 11 AAA team tournament at Willowbrook.
Emmaus, the LVC regular season and tournament champ, beat Northampton by 15 storkes in a regular season match in which Notaro was unable to compete in because of a schedule conflict.
The Hornets won Monday's team title by nearly the same margin, 499 to the Kids' 415. Parkland was third at 418.
