Kids get back on track against Becahi
It was the type of game that Northampton needed to get back on track in Lehigh Valley Conference play last Friday against Bethlehem Catholic. The K-Kids (2-2, 1-2) blasted the Golden Hawks 35-6 at Notre Dame-Green Pond to spoil Becahi's homecoming night and propel themselves with a boost of confidence heading into this week's battle with Central Catholic at Al Erdosy Field.
Northampton used scores just before halftime and right after the intermission to break open a close contest into a mentally deflating task for Becahi.
"We wanted to get that score after halftime to keep the momentum going," said Kids' head coach Jeff Brosky. "We knew it was important to get on top of them like that because they're a young team. Getting that touchdown after halftime was huge for us."
With Northampton holding a 14-6 lead just before halftime, the K-Kids scored late when quarterback Nick Cook found Ray Ramos from nine-yards out for a 21-6 lead into intermission.
The Hawks then opened up the second half with the ball, but it started in errors.
On the opening kickoff, both returners ran into each other trying to haul in the return and the first snap of the second half sailed over the head of Hawks' QB Nick Cortopossi for a loss of eight yards.
Becahi would punt and Northampton would strike quickly when Cook found wide receiver Kyle George for an 88-yard strike over the middle with 9:15 on the clock to give Northampton a seemingly insurmountable 28-6 lead.
"I think the thing we struggle with is guys getting frustrated and they fall out of what they are supposed to do in our system," said Becahi head coach Joe Henrich. "That play after halftime was something we worked on 20 times in practice and sometimes when guys are losing, they press too hard and it gets them out of their game because they feel like they need to make a play and that hurt us."
a play and that hurt us."
Cook threw three touchdowns on the night in Northampton's big victory after being shutout by Parkland the week before. He was 12 of 19 for 213 yards and also ran for 73 yards and a touchdown.
Kyle George continues his torrid season at wideout with his three catches for 145 yards and two touchdowns. He leads the league in reception yards with 542, while Cook leads the league in passing yards with 970.
With a struggling Central Catholic (1-3) team on the horizon this week, Brosky and company know this is a chance to make a run in the schedule.
"It's always good to get a win in the LVC and get some momentum in the conference," Brosky said. "We hope we can keep it going against Central now."
