Independent contractor is hired to provide employee vaccinations
An independent contractor will provide some medical services to employees, the Northwestern School Board was told at the Sept. 19 meeting.
There will be no cost to the district as it will come under the health insurance coverage.
Immunization clinics will be held at the school and will provide vaccinations against shingles, flu, pneumonia, tetanus and Hepatitis A and B.
"We took a look at it and decided how it should be expanded beyond flu shots," Superintendent Mary Anne Wright said.
In other matters, formation of a Northwestern Lehigh Volleyball Boosters Club was discussed. Bylaws and officers, followed by a formal application are needed.
Activities Director Jason Zimmerman has been working with the group.
There was a first reading for policies about purchases budgeted, payment of bills, petty cash, district audit and purchases not budgeted.
Policies to be rescinded include business and financial operations, budget planning, factors of budgeting, tax collector's guidelines, fiscal control, capital expenditure, procedure for payments of goods and services, sales tax policy and use of privately owned vehicles for school business.
Carbon Lehigh Intermediate Unit 21 will provide a professional development program about Middle School Standards of Mathematical Practice on Oct. 10. Funding will be from the Title II grant at a cost of $425.
Contracts were ap-proved for the following student activities: Bright Star Children's Theater to perform The Lady of Bullyburg and Jack's Adventure in American History at Weisenberg, Ballet Guild of the Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania Youth Ballet, to Perform "The Nutcracker" at Northwestern Elementary, Brian Xander for disc jockey services for the middle school dances, and Doggy Days for a physical fitness program at Weisenberg.
They are all paid from the student activities fund.
Assistant High School Principal Don Allen said Daniel Massetti has been walking around noticeably happy since placing as a semi-finalist for the National Merit Scholarship.
The Northwestern Lehigh Education Foundation has scheduled a clay shoot for Oct. 21.
The intermediate unit is trying to reinvent itself and one method was the video showing what the kids were doing at Camp Fowler this past summer.
They learn camping, social and physical therapy and academic work.
Board Chair Darryl Schafer said they want to bring the kids above the bar. There was a B (boys) Club and a G (girls) Club at the camp.
Director of Student Services Mark Scott said the camp helped support Parkland and our own students and brought them back ready to learn.
The October board meeting will be at Lehigh Carbon Technical Institute, Schnecksville, with dinner served by students at 5:45 p.m. and the meeting starting at 7:30 p.m.
There will be Penn Literacy training for middle school teachers to help teach reading and writing during the next in-service day, Leann Stitzel, director of curriculum, said.
Business Manager Leslie Frisbee said the audit is under way at the school with employees of auditor Bill Gorman.
The audit should be complete at the end of October.
