Girls get first loss
Entering this season, the Northampton girls' tennis team attempted to keep a low profile off their overall 16-3 season 12-2 Lehigh Valley Conference (LVC) in which they graduated five seniors including number one singles player Brittany Hodge.
So far, however, it has been hard to hide.
Beginning this week, the Kids had an overall 12-1 record that included an undefeated streak through their first eight matches. Their lone loss was to LVC perennial contender Parkland, who the Kids knew would be an uphill battle.
"Things are pretty good for us now," said head coach Eileen Carbone. "We knew Parkland would be a tough match for us. But overall the girls are doing a great job and everyone is happy." Carbone noted her team will finish the regular season with matches against Nazareth and Tamaqua before they begin the LVC tournament Monday. They also have a match against Wilson left on their schedule.
In some ways, it has been a surprising season, while in other ways, it hasn't.
"We had a number of girls back who did well last season," added Carbone. "At first, we didn't know what to expect, but they kept working hard and battling through everything. They are playing with a lot of confidence and know they have gained respect from other team in the (LVC)." Carbone noted victories over Central Catholic, Becahi, and Freedom have further cemented the Konkrete Kids' efforts.
"Those were all big wins for us this year," Carbone said. "They knew Becahi and Central would be difficult matches and Freedom gave us one of our regular season losses this year. They are all very determined and also stubborn. When we play a round-robin or have competition in practice, no one will give up their spot without a fight." Carbone highlighted the play of the McCall triplets – all seniors – who all have the top three singles spots for the Kids. Darby, Maddie and Avery the top three singles' players respectively each have two losses on the season.
"They have really worked to improve their game over the years," Carbone said. "They have grown as players and have turned into players who are active year-around. That has been a big plus for us." With the LVC and district play around the corner, Carbone is confident her club will respond in a positive manner in the postseason.
"When I looked at the possible players who can go far in singles, our girls will a have a solid shot to place high," Carbone said. "Our doubles teams have also been playing well and I expect them to make an impact.
"It has been another good year for us and we have the talent to keep it going further." When they do, most of the Lehigh Valley will recognize them.
