District 11 football Notes: Week 3 Liberty's KJ Williams breaks school's receiving TD mark

Editor's Note: Duke Helm, the District 11 statistician provides the District 11 Football Notes. These note are after week 3 of the high school season.

Liberty's KJ Williams caught three TD passes against Nazareth to become the all-time school leader in TD catches. Williams now has 17 for his career, breaking Joe Donaher's record of 15 TD catches set from 1965-67. Williams now has 1,046 yards receiving in his career to become the fifth Hurricane to accomplish that.

Freshman QB Doug Erney of Liberty completed 10 passes for 161 yards and four TDs in his first varsity action. The four TDs ties the school record held jointly by John Rabuck (1967) and Jim Villani (1975). It's one short of the District 11 freshman record of five set by AJ Long of Pius X in 2009. In comparison to that, Dan Persa threw four total TDs as a freshman starter for Liberty.

Catasauqua's Zack Bradley threw for 228 yards and four TDs against Palisades. The four TDs ties him with Barry Kennedy (1975), Joel Wedge (1995) and Jordy Miller (2002) for the school record.

Northampton's junior QB Nick Cook completed 23 passes for 234 yards against Parkland. Cook has thrown for 757 yards this season and is averaging 249 yards per game. Kyle George and Brandon Heimbach each caught 10 passes in that game to tie George Yaniger's school record. In 1988 George Yaniger caught 10 passes from Nazareth head coach Rob Melosky against Freedom to break Dave Ware's record of nine set in 1983. George had 164 receiving yards in the game to break former Penn State player Ryan Grube's school record of 161 yards in a game set in 1987.

Northwestern's Frank Dangello threw three TD passes against Wilson to tie the school record for a game. Mike Heintzelman (1975), Todd Schellhamer (1976) and Kyle Stelmack (2008) all threw three TDs in a game.

Is Pleasant Valley's freshman running back Austyn Borre the real deal? In 3 games he's rushed for 459 yards (13.5 ypc) and has 8 total TDs.

Well, ask the middle school players that played against him the last 2 years. Thanks to the Times News of Lehighton for this tidbit. In 20 middle school games, Borre rushed for 5,152 yards (257.6 ypg) and scored 69 touchdowns.

His teammate Brandon Leap tied his own school record of four TD passes in a game which he did last year against ESN. Scott Gordon (1971) and Derrik Walling (2010) also threw four in a game. Leap, a junior, also went over 1,000 yards passing for his career.

Jeff Krisiak of PMW went over 3,000 yards passing in his career and PME Evan Fardella and Wilson's Ryan Dailey went over 2,000 yards. Nazareth's sophomore RB Jordan Gray went over 2,000 yards rushing and 30 TDs for his career (2,140, 31 TDs).

Panther Valley's Richie Smith scored 7 TDs against Kutztown to set a new school record. Roger Gehring (1994) and Chas Field (2004) both had 5 TDs in a game.

Matthew Riddick of Dieruff had three TDs covering over 60 yards each against Wallenpaupack. Riddick ran two kickoff returns for TDs covering 70 and 71 yards and also caught a 61-yard TD pass from Quinton Williams.

On a sad note, Jim Thorpe's junior WR Khaaliq Lynch was in a car accident on Sunday and is in critical condition. Lynch, who went over 1,000 yards receiving for his career in week 2 (had no catches in week 3) was a passenger in the car.

Week 3 Trivia

KJ Williams of Liberty holds the school record for career TD catches with 17. Joe Donaher and Williams both had 11 in a season. Who holds the single season record at Liberty with 12 TD catches?
