Girls continue to be 'solid'

"Solid" is the word that fits when talking about Northampton's field hockey team.

Coach Kelly Backenstoe uses that word often when speaking about her unbeaten Konkrete Kids.

Northampton scored two more wins this past week - starting out with Nazareth 2-0 and trouncing Dieruff 7-1 - to raise the Kids' record to 6-0 overall and 4-0 in the Lehigh Valley Conference.

"I feel great. We've been solid on offense and on defense. Three of our wins were against North Division opponents (Whitehall, Parkland and Nazareth) and that is a good point to make in their league," Backenstoe said.

Backenstoe thinks her girls are, "playing each game as it comes. Don't forget we still have two-thirds of our schedule remaining."

The fifth-year coach at Northampton said, "Emily (Nonnemacher) has been consistent and Mikayla (Ninos) has been outstanding in goal. She's given up only three goals and has three shutouts as well."

Nonnemacher, a senior co-captain along with Tori Gollie, has 10 goals and six assists, while Ninos- another senior- has 37 saves after six games.

But, it's not only Nonnemacher on offense as eight others have scored goals or assists.

In the 2-0 win over Nazareth, Nonnemacher had both goals with assists from Megan Tiwold and Kaitlyn Fehnel. Laura Tierney, Megan Wiest, Jenni Perry, and Tori Gollie had key defensive plays, while Bri Bankos, Bri Dalton, Erin Tiwold, Autumn Klucsarits and Jackie Miller had great offensive games.

Then against Dieruff six girls figured in the scoring with Miller and Nonnemacher getting two goals each. Erin Tiwold, Fehnel and Rachel Heimbach added the other goals with Nonnemacher getting two assists and Perry one.

The Konkrete Kids begin a busy two-week stretch today when they visit Freedom. Saturday the Kids face Central Catholic in a 1 p.m. game at Whitehall during the LVC's annual Don Hunt Memorial Play Day.

Next week the Konkrete Kids visit Allen Monday and entertain Bethlehem Catholic Tuesday before visiting Easton on Thursday.

The busy schedule closes next Saturday with the annual "Senior Game" against Liberty at noon.
