Bridge needs immediate repairs

Roadmaster Kevin Huber reported at Heidelberg Township supervisors' September meeting that Rex Road Bridge has been designated Category One: in need of immediate attention.

The road surface is the problem, he said, mainly along the sides, but a complete re-decking would take a long time.

For the time being, the township has two options.

The first is to cover the bad areas with steel plating. This, however, would reduce the weight limit from 40 tons to 4 tons.

Chairman David Fink said this would cause an overloaded pickup to be in violation.

The second option, Huber said, would be to make the span a one-lane bridge.

This would require placing advance warning signs. If the township does nothing, he said, the bridge would probably have to be closed in six months.

Fink requested Keystone Consulting Engineers inspect the bridge.

"I don't want to throw any money at it until they look at it," Fink said.

Roy Stewart, representing Keystone, said the company would start on it right away.

Supervisor Steve Bachman said the stop sign at the exit from Northwest Centre strip mall needs attention.

"It's almost white," Bachman said, adding he thought the property owner would be responsible for it.

Stewart confirmed that was the case, and said that PennDOT should be notified.

The agenda for the meeting included a proposed amendment to the township's driveway ordinance, requiring a turnaround for all new driveways.

After a short discussion the amendment was approved.

In other business, Township Administrator Janice Bortz reported a request was received from Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful for information on illegal dumping sites in the area.

Huber identified one along the road to Bake Oven Knob, which has been accumulating litter for some time.

Bortz was authorized to provide the organization with the locations.

She also suggested the newsletter be scheduled for early March, rather than November, as previously planned.

This way it could include all the news from this year, as well as a more complete schedule of next year's events.

The board concurred with the change.

Heidelberg will celebrate Trick-or-Treat Night on Oct. 27.
