EMMAUS BOROUGH COUNCIL Truck ordinance postponed

Emmaus Borough Council postponed voting on an ordinance banning commercial trucks from parking on borough streets at the Sept. 17 meeting.

Council President Lee Ann Gilbert said language needed to be adjusted in the ordinance and changes were being made in the proposed penalties for parking large trucks on borough streets.

A first reading of the amended ordinance is expected at the Oct. 15 meeting with an anticipated second reading scheduled Nov. 5. The ordinance will be discussed next at a public safety committee meeting 3 p.m. Oct. 11.

Council voted to submit an application to Lehigh County for a Growing Greener fund matching grant to update the baseball field at Community Park. The Emmaus Youth Association is already working on updating the field and a grant from the county could match the funds EYA has raised for the project.

Council estimated donations for the project are around $60,000. They hope a matching grant from the county would allow the borough to complete the project. This would mean, in addition to the planned upgrades which started Sept. 17, the borough might be able to level the outfield, put up a temporary fence and install a new backstop.

EYA is also working to build new bullpens for the pitchers and catchers with the help of a local Scout working on his Eagle project.

Berkheimer will now be collecting taxes in the borough because the former tax collection agency went out of business and passed their accounts to the agency. Council is considering putting the service out for bid in the future.

Council passed the first reading of an ordinance allowing people who do not live in the borough to serve on commissions if they are interested. All candidates would still be vetted by council and there would be limitations on how many people who do not live in the borough could serve on a given board.

Another ordinance putting a stop sign at the intersection of N. 5th Street and North Street was tossed at the meeting. With Councilman Nathan Brown absent, the board was split 3-3 on the decision. Mayor Winfield Iobst cast the deciding vote shelving the proposed bill.

Council approved a crosswalk to be painted on Minor Street near the Rodale Building. Seven Generations Charter School is leasing the building for sixth and seventh grade classes.
