Coplay column
By all accounts summer is unofficially over in Coplay.
Community Days is in the past. The borough parkway pool is officially closed. St. Peter's large family picnic is a now a memory. Another National Night Out program ended and picnics by the dozens have been held.
Placing a further exclamation mark on summer's ending is the American Club of Coplay's annual family picnic, which was held Saturday. It was a smashing success.
A myriad of food stands were set up on the north side of the church, just outside the roofed pavilion, in such a way that they resembled the food courts seen at malls. Children devoured snow cones, popcorn and cotton candy. The indoor kitchen also offered hot dogs, steak, ham, sausage, turkey and meatball sandwiches, and the all-American favorite – hamburgers.
Those seeking healthy options could choose selections from a fruit bar and a salad bar. Other selections included clam chowder, pizza, french fries, potato cakes, pierogies, cabbage and noodles, chicken, halupkies, funnel cake, soft drinks and a separate birch beer stand and ice cream.
Many adults brought their own pop-up tents and children played on blow-up rides and a closed-in bounce area. The children stood in line to have their faces or cheeks painted by a clown.
In the pavilion, entertainment was offered in the form of live music.
People were shuttled to and from the grounds and pavilion via battery-powered golf carts.

At the Coplay Saengerbund pavilion, the Friday evening outdoor dances and rock music concerts continue, as the club awaits a ruling on whether the state LCB or the borough police will monitor the sound by decibel levels, which are under the borough's maximum decibel level set in the ordinance.
When the issue first surfaced, the outdoor events began later in the season than usual. Attendance took a hit and the crowds are not as large as they previously had been.
The club contends that a favorable ruling could bring back the crowd. For those in their 30s and 40s, the Saengerbund is the "in place" for couples as well as singles.
