Borough to try again for Monroe casino grant

The Borough of Northampton will try again to get a slice of Monroe County's casino funding.

At its Sept. 6 meeting, council gave the go-ahead to Community Planner Victor Rodite to submit a grant application for Monroe County funding, which is generated by Mount Airy Casino.

"Victor [Rodite] has contacted two local companies to see if they would be interested in participating," Borough Manager Gene Zarayko advised borough lawmakers.

"I am now working on three possible grant projects for gaming revenues from Monroe County's Mount Airy Casino. Since economic development and job creation are high priority types of projects, I am communicating with two local companies located in the Borough of Northampton about their need to expand," said Rodite in his report to council.

"We have been approached by the Delaware & Lehigh Heritage Corridor asking us to apply for a pedestrian bridge over Dry Run [Creek] which will bridge a gap in the old canal towpath. I am a little concerned about the competition of a park project. We have not had much luck in the past with two park projects proposed for casino grant monies," Rodite said.

Thus far neither casino revenue from Northampton County, which has the Sands operating in Bethlehem, nor Monroe County, via the Mount Airy Casino, have funneled any gaming receipts to the borough.

On a positive note, Rodite indicated although official approval has not yet been announced, it is understood 55 percent of the borough's $50,000 grant request to acquire and install a new emergency generator will be approved for the Northampton Memorial Community Center.
