EMMAUS BOROUGH COUNCIL As summer comes to a close, so does the pool
The swimming pool at Emmaus Community Park is closed for the season due to a mechanical problem in the pump.
The pool was forced to close 13 days early because the pump's impeller sheared and a repair can not be implemented before the scheduled close of swimming season.
Season pass holders will receive a prorated credit which can be applied to next year's passes or pool admission.
Community Park will have 26 new recycling barrels with lids courtesy of donations by the Kiwanis Club of Emmaus and Rodale. Director of Public Works Jeff Clapper spearheaded the operation by sending out donation letters and the containers are now ready to be placed in the park.
Emmaus Borough Council voted to make a change in their natural gas supplier at the Sept. 4 meeting. They chose to move to Glacial Energy on a variable rate plan and Borough Manager Shane Pepe said it will result in a possible savings of $3,000 to $4,000 per year.
Council implemented a new social media policy for borough employees, volunteers and committee members.
In discussing the new policy, council said the policy was necessary to protect the borough because of problems in other areas due to information on social networking sites.
Pepe said the borough will not be sifting through employees' networking accounts and described the policy as more of a precautionary measure.
"We are not going to be that far reaching," Pepe said. "Frankly, if there is something bad out there we will find out (through word of mouth)."
The borough will be selling four aging public works' vehicles. Council plans to sell them on the municibid website.
John and Priscilla Robinson, of Emmaus, attended the meeting with their lawyer John Ashcroft to speak against a proposed ordinance banning large commercial trucks from parking in the borough.
They pleaded with council to take another look at the ordinance and find a way to accommodate the hardworking truck drivers who live and work in the borough.
John Robinson said he owns and operates an independent truck and cannot park his vehicle on a company's property as some other truckers might be able to do.
Robinson also said he goes out of his way to avoid disturbing his neighbors. He told council he understands wanting to keep outside truckers from parking in the borough but asked them to consider a way for residents to park.
Ordinance No. 1087 prohibiting commercial vehicles, truck tractors or trailers from parking on any public street or in any public area of the borough is scheduled for a second reading and final vote at the Sept. 17 meeting.
Trick or treat night is scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 31. Mayor Winfield Iobst made a proclamation officially announcing the time and date and said people in the community should turn on their porch lights between those hours if they would like to participate.
