Lil' Hornets open with a bang
Emmaus' SYFL teams all earned victories over Hokendauqua in their season openers over the weekend.
The 80-pound Hornets started their season off on the right track by beating the Hokey Eagles 20-13. Outstanding play by offensive linemen Nick Davidson, Danny Ahne, Jake Fotta, Chase Fotta, Trevor Gitski, Andrew Harmon and David Iobst paved the way for a well-balanced backfield. Austin Schaffer sealed the victory for the Hornets by intercepting an Eagle pass in the closing seconds of the game.
After giving up seven points in the first quarter on the opening drive, the Hornet 95s' offense answered right back with a Kordell Waiters, off-tackle 53-yard scamper, in which he broke several tackles for the score. In the second half, the offense, led by quarterback Chad Newhard, was firing on all cylinders. After scoring late in the third quarter, Newhard barreled and pushed the pile for an extra point. The defense was solid throughout all four quarters, Tristan Francis and Waiters each picking up five tackles and a fumble recovery. The great team effort led to a 19-7 win for Emmaus.
With the stampede of the offensive line, led by Ian "The Bull" Kauffman, the 110 pound team earned a win on their opening season game against the Hokey Eagles. The offensive attack continued throughout the game, and the score added up, as Deonte Castro and Isaiah Serrano scored the Hornet touchdowns. On the defensive side, a fumble recovery by Peyton Hyndman, sacks by Jude Negron and Hyndman and the consistent, aggressiveness by Jaren Rader and the entire defense shut down the Eagles offense for a 20-0 win.
In the 125 pound game, it was Emmaus from the opening snap as the team scored early and often in a 42-0 victory over the Eagles. Touchdowns by Noah Breidinger, Liam Toomey, Jake Miller, Guiseppi Carbone and Corbin Carrigan highlighted the Hornets attack. Dan Wassel, Nick Martilucci and Ben Maehrer kept pressure on the quarterback all game long.
