GOLF Notaro, Kunkle win Wasser Cup
Evan Notaro has had a busy summer and has played in a number of highly competitive and memorable tournaments on the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) tour this summer.
Yet, his share in one recent victory will likely be remembered for a while and also could play a prominent role in Northampton's golf season this fall.
Notaro teamed with fellow senior Kevin Kunkle to recently capture the 12th annual Wasser Cup title at Shepherd Hills Golf Course. The Wasser Cup began in 2001 and was organized by the family of the late John Wasser, who was fatally struck by lightning in 1998.
The Konkrete Kids' duo combined to shoot a best-ball, tournament-record 63 and edge teams from Northwestern and Parkland that tied for second with a 67. A total of 16 teams from the greater Lehigh Valley competed in the tournament.
"We definitely played well together," said Notaro of his successful combination with Kunkle. "This was a nice win for us here and the tournament was very competitive. We played against the best golf tandems in the area."
Kunkle, a junior who played in US Junior Amateur Qualifier Amateur and posted an eighth-place finish in the Lehigh Valley Junior Tournament of Champions also this summer, is excited about the season. The Kids are coming off a 9-2 campaign last season in the ultra-competitive Lehigh Valley Conference and have a solid core of returnees back in the fold.
"We should have a good season," he said. "We have a number of players who can shoot in the 70s and we want to be able to do well in the postseason."
Notaro, who won the District 11 individual championship in 2010 and the Lehigh Valley Medal Play this past June, will compete in the AJGA finale at the legendary Greenbriar Golf Course over Labor Day before he rejoins his team. In a tri-match with Freedom and Central Catholic Monday, the Kids registered a total of 374 without Notaro.
"We are off to a good start," he said of the season. "They had a solid score without me. But we have the depth this year to go far. We had a good year last season, but we have the potential to be better."
Notaro expects to have a strong individual season as well.
"I have been working on my entire game, and I have been hitting the ball very well lately," he said. "I have been shooting and putting better under pressure and I have been consistent. I haven't been getting into any major trouble.
"We're all excited to have a good run and put everything together."
