Hannah Killian, youth services librarian at Parkland Community Library, is planning a special event, "Touch a Truck," for people of all ages on the lawn at the South Whitehall Township municipal complex.

Township commissioners voiced enthusiastic approval at their Aug. 1 meeting for the event scheduled for 10 a.m.-noon Sept. 29.

Killian foresees having fire trucks, ambulances, police vehicles and public works equipment on display for children and adults to see and touch.

In other business, Commissioner David Bond, who serves on the volunteer fire department sub-committee, reported Parkland High School will "resurrect" its fire science class, probably in 2013.

Bond said the course will be important for students in an educational sense, while it will also develop an awareness of volunteer firefighting.

This will hopefully spark a desire among young poeple to participate in local fire company training, Bond said.

Commissioners approved David Eisenberg as an alternate member of the zoning hearing board.

An attorney who serves as a trustee on the U.S. Bankruptcy Court, Eastern District of PA, Eisenberg was highly recommended by commissioners Glenn Block and Bond who interviewed him for the position.

Block noted a vacancy exists for a second alternate to the zoning board, and he invited individuals to apply for the opening.

Commissioners approved purchase of furniture for the front office of the police department at a cost of $16,400 from Corporate Environments.

Lt. John Christman reported the furniture in use was secondhand 30 years ago.

Although Trans America submitted a bid of $6,902.96, Christman said the product was of a lower quality raising concerns over long-term durability.

The new furniture includes three work stations, a printer station and a filing system.

Christman said the front office staff was involved with the design and planning of the furniture upgrade.
