Pollard earns D-11 silver medal

All three Parkland singles players qualified for this year’s District 11 Championships, which were held last week at Freedom High School and Lehigh University.

The Trojans’ top singles player, sophomore Sadie Pollard, earned a second consecutive silver medal at districts.

Pollard was the second seed in the Class 3A bracket and beat Liberty’s Sarah Wang 6-1, 6-0 in the first round before taking down Emmaus’ Brooke DiGiacomo by the same score in the quarterfinal round.

Pollard beat No. 3 seed Vasoula Skarlis (Stroudsburg) 6-1, 6-3 in semifinals before falling to Zoe Santana (Emmaus), 6-2, 6-0 in the title match.

Pollard earned a silver medal for the second straight season after reaching last year’s title match where she faced former teammate Lexie Warsing.

Parkland’s No. 2 singles player, Sonia Lee, was seeded fifth in the district singles tournament. She beat Katie Ryer (Freedom) 6-1, 6-1, in the first round and took down No. 4 seed Elizabeth Trott (Pocono Mountain East) in the quarterfinals before running into Santana in semis and falling 6-0, 6-2.

Kiana Miles, who played No. 3 singles for Parkland this season, was seeded ninth in districts and beat No. 8 seed Aurora Clark (Freedom) in the opening round before falling to Santana in the quarterfinals.

Miles’ 6-2, 6-2 score against Santana were the most games any player took against the Hornet sophomore en route to winning her first district title last week.

The Trojans are back on the court this week in the District 11 Doubles Championships.

Pollard and Lee are defending district doubles champs and the top-seeded pairing in this year’s tournament. Two other Parkland doubles pairings will compete at districts. They are Yihan Li and Syrien Alvin, and Hannah Schmoyer and Ashley Carl.
