WHS boys begin final stretch
The Whitehall boys soccer team is in the thick of things when it comes to the EPC standings as the end of the regular season draws closer.
The Zephs sit at 5-2-4 as of Monday morning, in sixth place in the EPC. While Freedom is just ahead of them at 6-1-2, it realistically may be tough to catch the likes of Emmaus, Parkland, Pleasant Valley and Northampton, teams who, as of now, seem to be etched in the top-four.
Still, the Zephs will use this time to work on things to help them make a potential run in the postseason.
“Defensively we are doing very well. I believe 7-8 shutouts we currently have,” said head coach Chris Malone. “Scoring has been a little difficult for us this year thus far but William Quiros Figueroa has really done a nice job for us all around. He is a senior captain and has 6 goals and 5 assists thus far. He scored the lone goal in our Easton match.
“Our back line of Chase Taylor, Jibril Settles, Aidan Wells and Jon Stinner, as well as our goalie Bryson Taylor, have really been a strong point for us this year.”
The Zephs have seven games left on their schedule, counting Tuesday’s matchup at Bethlehem Catholic which is after Press deadlines. After that they travel to Parkland Oct. 1 before hosting Pocono Mountain East, Oct. 5.
Oct. 7 they are at Central and back home Oct. 9 against Pocono Mountain West before ending with two very tough games - at Emmaus on Oct. 12 and then home against cement rival Northampton Oct. 14.
A new rule this year has made the season a bit more interesting to this point.
“This year there is no overtime in the regular season so if you’re tied at end of regulation it ends as a draw,” Malone said. “It does limit some wear and tear which is relevant for us, but I would like to have seen us in at least two of the four ties finish a little better.
“Regardless, we are continuing to work to get better every day. We have Becahi and Parkland away this week.”
