EHS tops PM East in EPC opener

The Emmaus football team won its second straight game with a 21-7 victory over Pocono Mountain East last Friday at East Penn School District Stadium.

After a pair of losses to open the season, the Hornets (2-2 overall; 1-0 East Penn Conference) got back to .500 overall while winning their league opener.

The Cardinals opened the scoring with a 4-yard touchdown run for a 7-0 first quarter lead.

The Hornets took control of the game when they erupted for three second quarter touchdowns, including two touchdown catches by Mason Lenig.

The senior tight end hauled in a 20-yard pass from Kellen Hafner to tie the game then caught an 8-yard pass from Hafner for a 14-7 lead.

Manolo Bermudez capped the scoring with a 22-yard touchdown run latte in the first half.

The Hornets piled up 287 total yards in the game with 157 coming on the ground. Bermudez led the way with 138 yards on 20 carries.

Hafner was 11-for-18 for 130 yards with two touchdown and one interception in the game. Lenig caught five passes for 54 yards. He was one of six players to catch a pass in the win.

Lenig also led the Hornet defense with 11 tackles, including three sacks, six stops for losses and one forced fumble. Nik Castro made seven tackles with three stops for a loss. Shane Leyden and Legend Vasquez had four tackles each, while Angel Cardona was one of six Hornets to make three tackles. All three of Cardona’s stops went for a loss of yardage.

George Marmoros made all three extra points in the win.

After opening the season with nonleague losses to Neshaminy and Phillipsburg, Emmaus got in the win column against Scranton before beating PME in its first EPC game of the 2026 season.

The Hornets will travel to Nazareth Friday to face a Blue Eagle team that has already beaten three EPC teams, although two were nonleague games.

Nazareth (3-1) opened the season with a loss to Garnet Valley before beating Whitehall 49-13, Central Catholic 42-14 and Freedom 31-0 last Friday night.
