Last week in girls soccer, the Freedom Patriots were looking to force the mistake while Allentown Central Catholic was searching for intensity, and in the end, intensity won, 1-0, on Sept. 17 at Freedom.

A Freedom foul in the 72nd minute led to the game’s only goal by Gabrielle Eddinger on an assist by Alex Pangaio.

“It’s one of those things that, in my opinion, is a touch foul,” said Freedom coach Tony Billone. “A little bump and a girl goes down, and the ref blows the whistle. I wish it would have been a different outcome. I wish it would have been play on because I don’t think it was a big foul, but regardless, we have to make the play once the whistle’s blown.”

Patriot goalie Brooklyn Pronovich batted the ball away twice before Eddinger was able to find the back of the net.

“Brooklyn was outstanding today,” Coach Billone said. “The ball came into the box, and we were unable to clear it. We were getting tired, and I was trying to make some subs in the back because the back line was asking to come out, so I had to put a couple of girls in who don’t normally play those positions in those positions. Even though we were bending, we weren’t breaking, but we had to get some fresh legs. Just ran out of time.”

Central’s intensity picked up in the second half, but a shot by Alana Ho was cleared by Cece Warren and another saved by Pronovich.

Freedom forward Vivian Botros attempted to shots on goal in the first half, one of which hit the crossbar.

Earlier in the week, Liberty won its fourth match, 12-2, against Bethlehem Catholic at Liberty.

“The things we’ve been doing have come to fruition,” said Liberty coach Andrew Uhler. “Everything’s complete for us. There’s an unselfishness about our team that’s allowing us to flourish. Our agility and ability to make cuts and outwork ... is what puts us over the top.”

Liberty freshman Jade Bush had a hat trick for the Hurricanes in the first half.

“I just wanted to keep going. My first one, I saved it off the line going out of bounds, and I made a move and took it from an awkward angle,” Bush said. “I feel like scoring put me in a good position (as a freshman), and everybody on the team supported me.”

Sofia Quarry was the first to put the Hurricanes on the board.

“Last year, we didn’t win against [Bethlehem Catholic], and this year, it was exciting to win this game,” said Quarry, whose second goal came off a cross from Bush. “We’re working well as a team this year and just connecting.”

Senior Emilya Teran is this year’s captain but feels more like a sister on the field.

“I’d like to get some more goals and have more shots on goal,” she said. “The energy on the field is amazing. We haven’t let down at all. As long as we keep that going, I think this season is going to be great.”

Liberty goals were also scored by Leah Harting, Violet Berk, Avery Clagett, Cameron Clagett, and Elena Bays.

Rio Stoudt scored the first goal for Bethlehem Catholic in the 58th minute, and Leah Lacey also scored for the Golden Hawks 10 minutes later.

Coach Uhler addressed the lopsided match with having experienced Liberty’s share of losses in the past.

“We’ve been in those positions and know what it feels like, and so for us, it’s really important to make sure that other teams don’t feel that same way,” he said. “We’ve been on the receiving end in past years, so we want to try and keep it as respectable as possible for them. Beca has a bunch of great kids, their coach is excellent. Nothing but love for Brad and the team, so we don’t want them to feel disheartened.”
