The 11th annual Northampton Area School District Student Council car show raised $8,041, according to Roy and Sue Maranki, who organized the event.

There were 282 vehicles on display July 25 at the event, held at Bicentennial Park West, East Allen Township, Roy Maranki said at the board of education meeting Sept. 14.

Maranki thanked Student Council members who volunteered at the show; Chuck Frantz, who provided trophy awards; and Ross Makary, school director, who helped out.

“I couldn’t have done it without my wife, Sue, who handled the emails,” Maranki added.

NASD Superintendent of Schools Joseph S. Kovalchik thanked the Marankis for their efforts, saying the car show has raised approximately $50,000 during its run.

In other news, Kovalchik lauded Northampton Area High School senior Ada Barnhorst, Student Council vice president, who is among 10,000 National Merit Scholars semifinalists of 1.2 million National Merit Scholars. Commended NAHS National Merit Scholar students are Anthony Curto and Marc Jusinski.

Also at the Sept. 14 meeting, the first for the board in the new education center, school directors voted 9-0, to approve Gillian Armstrong, sixth-grade science teacher at Northampton Area Middle School, effective Oct. 19-Dec. 23, at $188 per day; Lindsey Fenstermacher, health room assistant at NAHS, effective Sept. 29, at $29.04 per hour, with benefits; John Knobloch, security guard at NAHS, effective Sept. 15, at $25 per hour, in accordance with the NASD; Denise Phillip-Howard, school crossing guard, Aug. 14 through last student day of the 2026-27 school year, at $18 per hour, with no benefits; Maria Nicklas, school crossing guard, as of Aug. 14 through the last student day of the 2026-27 school year, at $18 per hour, with no benefits; traffic duty monitors, effective Aug. 24 through the 2026-27 school year with compensation at the bargaining unit’s contractual rate; extracurricular and supplemental positions for the 2026-27 school year; full-time district staff, substitutes, coaches and extracurricular staff to work athletic events and listing of part-time seasonal athletic event staff for the 2026-27 school year, effective Aug. 1-June 30, 2027; revised listing of building substitute teachers for the 2026-27 year, at building substitute per diem rate of $195, with no benefits; revised mentor and inductee list for the 2026-27 year, including mentors and stipend payments; and mandatory attendance for school security officer John Knobloch at a basic school resource officer training course at Archbald, Lackawanna County, Sept. 21-25, at $550 for the training, with meals, mileage and hotel calculated at IRS and GSA travel reimbursement rate, included in the 2026-27 NASD security budget.

School directors voted 8-0-1, with one abstention (school board President John Becker), to approve department coordinators, district coordinators, NAMS subject leaders and team leaders for 2026-27 school year.

School directors, by a 9-0 voice vote, approved resignations for Diane Krogstad, NAMS teacher for retirement, effective last day of the 2026-27 school year; Joseph Billy, Siegfried Elementary School teacher for retirement, effective Jan. 26, 2027; Donna Weigold, NAHS instructional assistant for retirement, effective June 4; Cory Marsteller, NAMS 10-month police officer, effective Oct. 23; and Dana Houser, health room assistant, Lehigh Elementary School, effective June 4.

The board of education meeting is next scheduled to meet 6:30 p.m. Oct. 12 in the conference room at East Allen Elementary School and Education Center, 7200 New Seemsville Road, East Allen Township.
