FARMSTAND OF THE WEEK
This week I visited Tyler Rex the producer of Tyler and Pappas Hand Spun Honey and learned a lot of bees and honey. I got to meet Tyler, his grandfather Terry, and his son Mason. They are three generations of bee keepers who sell honey from Tyler’s home in Germansville.
Terry used to keep bees in the 70s and Tyler was eager to learn how to do it but he had to wait until he had his own place so when he purchased his home in 2015 Terry taught him all about keeping bees.
He started with two hives and now has 20 different hives. Each hive has 50,000 or more bees in it.
One of the things that makes Tyler’s honey special is that it is hand spun.
Spinning the honey is part of the filtering process.
All the honey is hand spun rather than using machines to spin the honey. It takes about 2 hours to spin 100 pounds of honey and Tyler and Terry work together to spin and bottle the honey.
Their honey is raw and unpasteurized.
Tyler offers 1 and 2 pound bottles and the cost is $10 per pound. The honey can be purchased at Tyler’s home at 7310 Bake Oven Road, Germansville.
There is a bee box marked on the front porch and it is self-serve.
If you are looking for local honey stop by and get a bottle!
Tyler offers the honey until it runs out for the season. They will soon have chickens eggs available too.
There is a sign at the end of the driveway so you know you are at the right place.
