Two people were fatally injured in separate crashes in Salisbury Township and Allentown hours apart Sept. 11. Charges have been filed in the Allentown crash, according to a news release from the Lehigh County District Attorney’s Office.

According to authorities, Eliezer Julius Santiago, 22, of Allentown, is charged with felony counts of aggravated assault by vehicle while driving under the influence and accidents involving death or injury while not properly licensed. He also faces misdemeanor and summary offenses, including driving under the influence, careless driving, possession of a small amount of marijuana for personal use, driving without a license, possession of drug paraphernalia, reckless driving and obstructing administration of law.

Santiago is charged in connection with a crash that fatally injured a 42-year-old Allentown woman who was operating a motor scooter in the 1600 block of South Fourth Street about 11:35 p.m. Sept. 11.

The woman was pronounced dead at 3:01 a.m. Sept. 12 in the emergency department at Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township, according to the Lehigh County Coroner’s Office and Forensic Center.

Court records show Santiago was unable to post $500,000 bail and remained in Lehigh County Jail.

According to authorities, the motor scooter was traveling south on South Fourth Street through the intersection near Lexington Street with two other scooter operators when a sport utility vehicle traveling behind the group struck the woman’s scooter from behind.

Authorities said the woman was not wearing a helmet.

The driver of the SUV, later identified as Santiago, allegedly fled the scene.

“That driver was taken into custody a short distance away when he nearly struck a police vehicle responding to the scene of the crash,” authorities said.

The woman died after charges were initially filed.

An autopsy was scheduled for Sept. 14.

In the second fatal crash, a 39-year-old motorcyclist from Fountain Hill was injured in a crash about 9:05 p.m. Sept. 11 along East Susquehanna Street in Salisbury Township, according to authorities, according to a press release from the coroner..

The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at 10:08 p.m. in the emergency department at St. Luke’s University Hospital, Bethlehem, according to a press release from the coroner.

According to a police news release, an SUV was traveling east in the 1100 block of East Susquehanna Street while following another vehicle closely. Authorities said the SUV crossed the double yellow line while passing the vehicle and struck the motorcycle head-on.

The motorcycle was traveling west on East Susquehanna Street.

The SUV driver was taken into custody, and criminal charges are pending, according to authorities.

Authorities said the motorcyclist was wearing a helmet.

An autopsy was scheduled for Sept. 14.
