Northwestern Elementary staff went all out to make students feel welcome as they celebrated the first day of the 2026-2027 school year on Aug. 24.
From the time cars and buses began lining up and doors opened, students were greeted with colorful sidewalk art, welcoming signs, upbeat music, and plenty of smiling faces.
The festive atmosphere kicked off the new school year with excitement and enthusiasm.
Music teacher Shawn Fies added the perfect soundtrack to the morning, playing his ukulele and singing his cheerful song, “The First Day is the Best Day of the Year.”
Throughout the building, hallways were filled with laughter, bright decorations, and the joy of students reconnecting with friends and teachers.
Staff members worked together to ensure the first day was more than just the beginning of another school year - it was a celebration.
The warm welcome and positive energy was a perfect start to what’s sure to be a fantastic year at NWE.

The first day is a pretty big deal but for all, but for Kenzie M., it’s a super special because she’s starting second grade and she can’t wait.
With backpacks full of everything they need to begin the school year, sisters Harper and Paige B. arrived ready to roll.
