Ensemble’s Hawk Mountain concert set for Sept. 13

PHOTO COURTESY HAWK MOUNTAIN SANCTUARYMembers of the Gabriel Chamber Ensemble — Dana Allaband and Simon Maurer, violins; Agnès Maurer, viola; and Ailin Hsieh, cello — will return to Hawk Mountain Sanctuary at 2 p.m. Sept. 13, for Stars, Stripes, and Strings!, an afternoon of chamber music celebrating the American spirit. Set amid the natural beauty of Hawk Mountain, the program will feature a lively mix of familiar favorites and distinctive works by Aaron Copland, George Walker, Philip Glass, Maria Thompson Corley, Scott Joplin, Antonín Dvorak, Johann Sebastian Bach and John Philip Sousa, along with America the Beautiful. Highlights include Copland’s “Hoedown” from Rodeo, Walker’s “Lyric,” music from Glass’s Mishima, Corley’s “Psalm 121,” two Scott Joplin rags, movements from Dvorak “American” String Quartet and Sousa’s “The Stars and Stripes Forever.” The concert continues the ensemble’s tradition of presenting music at Hawk Mountain, where chamber performance and the surrounding landscape combine for a distinctive outdoor concert experience.
