Visitors stepped back into the 1800s during a recent program at the Gov. Wolf Historical Society’s Wolf Academy Historic Site, where Egypt resident and historical reenactor Gary R. Weaver shared the stories behind the firearms carried by soldiers during some of America’s defining conflicts.

Held at the Wolf Academy Historic Site, 6600 Jacksonville Road, Weaver’s presentation explored the development and use of military weapons from the late 18th and 19th centuries. An expert on historic firearms, he discussed the iconic Brown Bess musket issued to British soldiers during the American Revolution, as well as pistols and imported rifles used by Union and Confederate troops during the American Civil War.

Along with replica firearms from his collection, Weaver displayed period military equipment including leather cartridge boxes, percussion cap boxes and ammunition, giving visitors a closer look at the gear soldiers relied upon more than 150 years ago. The program was one of many family-friendly events offered through the Lehigh Valley Passport to History, a partnership of historic sites, museums and heritage organizations across Lehigh, Northampton and neighboring counties. The organization continues to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary with tours, exhibits, reenactments and educational programs throughout the year.
