The Heavy and Highway Construction Laborers Local 158 went beyond its role as a major sponsor of the July 19 Great Big Group Ride fundraiser for the Pediatric Cancer Foundation of the Lehigh Valley by helping make a young cancer survivor’s cycling experience even more memorable.

After learning that 13-year-old cancer survivor Carter Boyle would be participating in the annual cycling event for the first time alongside his grandfather, Paul Boyle, Local 158 Business Manager Jamie Andrews was inspired to act. Andrews organized a collection among local and state union members to purchase a new bicycle for Carter, replacing the older bike he rode during the fundraiser.

Family members, including Carter’s siblings, Cash, 11, and Cannon, 9, joined Laborers Local 158 members from the union’s Coplay office and staff from the Pediatric Cancer Foundation of the Lehigh Valley on July 31 at the organization’s South Whitehall headquarters for a surprise presentation.

Less than a week after celebrating his 14th birthday, Carter was presented with a personalized Trek road bike.

“These guys do a fantastic job at PCFLV with everything they do, and this was just an opportunity we had to take,” Andrews said.

The Great Big Group Ride raises funds to support the Pediatric Cancer Foundation of the Lehigh Valley and its programs for children and families affected by childhood cancer.
