The summer season seems to be a time of tremendous growth. Cornfields are full of 6-foot-high stalks, and gardens will soon be bursting with tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, peppers, peas and beans. I am convinced my tomatoes talk to each other and conspire to ripen all at the same time!

If your garden is overflowing with produce, the Plant-A-Row program at your local library may be the solution for your excess bounty. Drop off fruits and vegetables in the cooler at the library entrance after 6 p.m. Sunday or before 10 a.m. Monday. Donations will be picked up and distributed to local food banks. The program runs weekly through Oct. 5.

If you are in the market for plants to extend the gardening season, The Seed Farm, 5854 Vera Cruz Road, Emmaus, will host its fifth annual Fall Plant Sale Aug. 15 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Aug. 16 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Stock up on cold- and frost-tolerant plants, including kale and cabbage, as well as flowers, herbs and native plants.

It will soon be time to plot a course to visit the many platzes that make up Bethlehem’s Musikfest. This year’s festival runs July 31 through Aug. 9, with a preview night July 30. Whether you visit Main Street or the main stage, there are performances to satisfy a variety of musical tastes, along with comedy acts. While we’re on the subject of taste, come hungry because the food choices are as varied as the musical genres.

The Salisbury Township Police Department’s National Night Out will be held Aug. 4 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on the grounds of Salisbury Middle School, 3301 Devonshire Rd. The community-building event brings police officers and neighbors together to foster positive partnerships and features food, fun and family-friendly activities. Mark your calendars for the Jerusalem Western Salisbury Church Summer Boutique and Craft Vendor Fair, scheduled 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 1 at the church, 3441 Devonshire Road.

Calling all prospective kindergarten parents: Register now for the upcoming school year. Eligible children must be 5 years old by Aug. 31, and preregistration is required at www.salisburysd.org/kindergarten. Kindergarten screenings will take place July 28-29, and a parent/guardian information session will be held 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Aug. 5. Don’t delay. The first day of kindergarten is Aug. 24.

The township’s yard waste drop-off centers are open for disposal of yard waste and branches. The Devonshire site will be open July 23 and 25, and the Franko site will be open July 27 and 30 and Aug. 1. Drop-off center hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays.
